Our partners at Surry-Yadkin Works joined us on June 13, 2023, for the annual North Carolina Business Committee for Education (NCBCE) luncheon honoring the organization’s members. Hosted at the Governor’s Mansion in downtown Raleigh, attendees mingled with NCBCE staff, business members, board members, and participants of other NCBCE initiatives.

Governor Roy Cooper joined the festivities, introducing himself personally to guests and speaking about the important work NCBCE does to connect businesses and educators in NC. He even withstood a hearty rendition of Happy Birthday from the crowd!

The event included lunch and a lively roundtable discussion led by NCBCE’s Board Chair, Leslie Walden, Vice President, Regional Public Affairs, Fidelity Investments. Four NCBCE initiatives were highlighted, including Building Bright Futures, Tech Team, the Governor’s Educator Discovery Awards, and Ready, Set, App!.

Maddy Triplett, a recent high school and pre-apprenticeship graduate who is about to embark on an apprenticeship, spoke about the benefits of the program and her passion for the early childhood education field. Her mentor, Angela Mondragon, emphasized the role mentors and more experienced teachers play in supporting and encouraging young people as they navigate both school and on-the-job learning at the same time, especially in the early childhood field. Whittney Harris, Workforce Development Specialist, echoed Angela’s and Maddy’s words while speaking about the challenges young people face when deciding on a future career.
