AMBER FAIRBETTER
Amber Fairbetter is the owner of Sunny Side Academy in Blowing Rock, NC and serves as a mentor to her apprentices. Amber shares the responsibilities and benefits of having a strong mentorship within a child care program.

Describe your role as mentor. What are your daily/weekly/monthly tasks?

Mentors in early childhood education provide regular guidance and support to those studying and training to be early childhood educators. My duties specifically include observing developmentally appropriate practices through activities, lesson plans, and interactions. I conduct CLASS assessments for lead teachers, offer strategies to improve those areas of implementation if needed, and - most importantly – provide encouragement to my mentees.

Describe the character traits a good mentor should possess.

Amber Fairbetter and Apprentice

A good mentor should have strong listening skills and be respectful when providing constructive feedback. Ideally, they should take a personal interest in their mentee, show responsibility towards them, and take pride in their role as mentor.

What are the benefits of being a mentor?

Being a mentor can both support and strengthen a program overall. You witness mentees gaining knowledge of the field and finding the joy of setting and meeting goals – all of which leads to a sense of fulfillment for both mentors and mentees. There are frequent learning opportunities to gain new perspectives, self-reflect, and sharpen leadership skills.

Tell us about the importance of mentorship, particularly in early childhood education.

Mentoring in early childhood can help educators develop in this profession by giving them a platform for quality conversation and coaching to support positive outcomes for the children. A strong mentor relationship gives the educators a better outlook of their classroom, teaching style, and interactions with children, families, and colleagues. Early childhood not only has its joyful moments but challenging ones as well and it is important to have someone to talk to. Having a mentor in this field helps to support professional growth and shows the importance of early childhood education as well as quality child care. Having a strong mentor relationship promotes a positive attitude towards lifelong learning and assists educators in rising above the shortcomings we see in early childhood.

What advice do you have for those considering becoming a mentor to an apprentice?

It is important for those considering becoming a mentor to be prepared and willing to offer constructive criticism in a respectful, thoughtful manner. That is essential when helping your mentee progress in your program and achieve their academic and professional goals. To build a strong relationship, mentors should show support, empathy, and always try to be understanding. Mentees should be given the appropriate responsibilities they need to grow and communicate effectively. Communication is a word I can’t emphasize enough. Connecting with your mentee through your own experiences and knowledge is also helpful.
